I’m singing in the rain…

So, Avloomat. how do you think you can you be of value to the school? my interviewer asked.

i was stumped.

how could i be stumped? how could i be lost for words? i have thought of this question and written the answers down last night. although brief, the points are detailed enough to warrant a good response.

The interviewer looks at me expectantly. i smiled.

‘my strengths are … ‘ anything that i uttered following those words were BS. but it did sound impressive. i was abstract. it was cryptic. i appeared happy with myself.

well now you know how embarrassing it was.

she was a smart, intelligent lady, the interviewer. however, i went on so fast that she could not catch up with my thought train. i was four sentences ahead in the comprehesion carriage.

she nodded her head in agreement to my last few sentences which truthfully, were gobbledigup. English words it may have been but the English language it is not.

and then a miracle happen…

from out of nowhere i said:
‘i am an arts buff. i like film, music and theatre. i think if the school can put up a show of some sort, for example a musical, for which i have some experience, i think i may be of some help.

‘i admit that i am no expert in these fields but these are my interest. i think by putting up these types of shows the school is not only showcasing its academic excellence but also its excellence in the arts. if parents are impressed it means that the public would be impressed. and hence the profile of the school is increased.

‘by being instrumental in the development of the show i will be able to show you my value to the school.’

i could almost hear the roar of approval from the audience. YES HE SCORES!

the interviewer gleed with approval. immediately she talked about what she had been impressed with.

‘i am very impressed in particular your work on translation.’

worried about my teaching credentials, i hadnt thought about my writing cred. the truth was my mediocre writing talent had impressed my interviewer.

she went on to talk about the salary package and my availability.

it was at that point of time i knew that i had clinched the job.

if i had Balki with me i would do the dance of joy. if i had a row of russians i would do the kick dance. HELL! i would even do the Riverdance, the zapin and the bus stop! most tempted i was to do a Gene Kelly. i thought perfect timing and weather. unfortunately i wised up and decided on keeping myself dry for the next few hours. but of course that would be after i do the air guitar celebration ala Bill and Teds’ Excellent Adventure.

interview ends.

as promised, i am off for coffee and ciggies.

good morning Kings and Queens of Hougang, good morning princes and princesses of Toa Payoh.
