Your Saviour

As I entered the school compound, that familiar scent came over me; despite the cold winter’s morning. Because of my 2 lovely nieces, I had arrived a good 45mins before everyone.

It was a magnificent school or at least when the rest of the school eventually gets built.

The thing is, the building hasn’t been completed just yet. The east wing, the gym and the canteen is but the west and north building, the swimming pool, the auditorium and many others aren’t. Still as it stands, I can see both its potential and current majesty; the epitome of a modern international school. That notion was confirmed when I saw the model that is on display in the entrance foyer.

We passed by the Shanghai American School on the way before that. Now, that school is a one huge mother… this school that I am in is a dwarf comparatively. However, it is possible that it could compete with SAS size wise in the near future. I have no doubt about that.

Upon arrival, the first two people that I met were the principal and the vice principal.

‘You are Mr HisapSua Avloomat I suppose?’

‘Yes I am.’ I said.

‘How do I address you? Mr HisapSua or Mr Avloomat?’ Mr Principal asked.

‘Mr Avloomat is fine. It’s easier.’ I said.

There were warm smiles and cold handshakes all around.

Coincidently there was another teacher who happens to pass by. She came in equipped with that worried look and harried pace that we teachers usually possess. Maybe it was just the chilly weather. I don’t know.

Without hesitating she beamed as she gazed at me and said:

‘Hi! Are you Mr Avloomat?’

It seems that she saw me as something of a godsend. I don’t think it was my ugly looks. I don’t think it was my slack butt. But I think it was the fact that I was a new teacher in the school, a fairly young one, and a male species to be exact, who have arrived to lighten the burden.

‘Thank god,’ they would say.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not a saviour. My ego isn’t boosted by such notions of grandeur. In fact I feel a bit daunted.

Thinking about it I gasp in horror. Of course all these happened in my head.

O my god! Have I made the wrong choice?

I saw the traffic jam and inhabitants’ disregard for the traffic rules on the way to school.

I said to myself, ‘welcome to the real Shanghai.’

And now this…

Your saviour! Say hey –hey ey-ey ey EY ey ey eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy….

Please Dear Lord, save me….

So that’s my first day at work.

With regards to many things, they say, ‘it’s like riding a bike.’

I must say I feel a bit rusty but it suppose it will all come back in gust of déjà vu soon.
