Assumptions and Desires

For a while, the weather in Shanghai got warmer. But then Mother Nature had other ideas. On came the wind, the thunder, the lightning and finally the rain.

It is raining right now as we speak. It isn’t a torrential rain. It is more of a drizzle really. However, any rain at this time of the year in Shanghai makes certain that the temperature dips below 10.

I have made quite an acquaintance with the cold weather for a couple of years now. Nevertheless, I haven’t got used to the wind that sometimes accompanies it. I think not many people are accustomed to it no matter how long they have lived in a country where the winter wind is normal. Of course it is a different story altogether if one is to live near the Artic and Antarctic circles.

However, those are mere assumptions.

Speaking of assumptions, I have long expressed my distaste for people who assume that if you are from a certain place you won’t be able to take the cold weather. Or that if you are of certain religious sect life will be so hard for you that you would starve to death. They assume that you have done nothing else in your life except live in that tiny hole called flats. Or been nowhere else apart from that even tinier shit hole called Singapore.

Moving on.

Many people assume that religion restricts a person. In some ways that is true. In some ways those assumption fall flat on the ground and could be trudge on day and night until it becomes a mere pulp.

True, there are many rules in religion. But I think it is the same with regards to an individual who lives in country or as a person who is bounded by their cultural values. People fail to see that they are governed by laws and rules of society because they are used to it. They feel that they can do anything because they understand the boundaries and not cross it.

So if one is still governed by the laws of a country, can we still say that one is liberated? It is absurd to think so. It is an absolute misconception.

The truth is, if one understands the boundaries, ironically, the boundaries become an endless labyrinth of possibilities.

Absolute freedom isn’t possible on the face of the earth. Our senses make damn sure they restrict us. It is our desires that sometimes or most of the time restricts us.

Inability to curb our desires will impede our movement towards our true potentials. Our desires if not left in check will facilitate our self destruction.

Be not the prisoner of your desires. Liberate yourselves!
